Ghosts, goblins and gallons of candy… time to celebrate Halloween!




Halloween is the sweetest and spookiest day of the year for many Canadians. Children dress up as their favourite characters and trick or treat for sweet treats. But who says Halloween is just for kids? Contract Testing recently conducted an extensive survey on Halloween candy preferences with over 1,000 participants from across Canada and the findings may surprise you. One thing is for sure, Mom and Dad do eat the leftovers!

Here are some of the interesting findings and insights from this survey:

Canadians light their pumpkins.
More than 90% of Canadians participate in Halloween festivities by handing out candy to trick or treaters.

Chocolate is the clear winner!
When it comes to Halloween sized treats, 70% of Canadians prefer chocolate bars. Followed by potato chips (10%), gummy candy (9%) and hard candy (3%).

1 piece just won’t do.
Canadians are generous when it comes to giving out candy as more than 50% of Canadians buy more than 100 pieces for trick or treaters.

Bulk buying is key.
It is no surprise that volume buying is key for consumers and most purchase Halloween candy at grocery stores (63%), followed by big box stores (30%).
Leftovers don’t go to waste.

Unlike last week’s dinner, leftover Halloween candy is always a hit!
Nearly 80% of Canadians eat the leftovers, while 12% donate it to colleagues, neighbours or friends.
