Traditional Burgers Are King of the Grill!
NEW SURVEY FINDS CONSUMERS LIKE TO STICK WITH CLASSICS WHEN IT COMES TO GRILLING
May is National BBQ month and what better way to celebrate than firing up the grill. Nothing beats the taste of a meal cooked outdoors, especially when it is enjoyed al fresco.
Ever wonder if the burger or the hotdog reigns supreme? And when it comes to burger fixings, are you a traditionalist or a modernist?
Contract Testing recently conducted an extensive survey on consumer burger preferences with over 1000 participants from across Canada and the United States.
Here are some of the interesting findings and insights from this survey:
Consumers prefer patties over dogs.
More than 80 per cent of consumers say they pick hamburgers over hot dogs.
Classic beef burgers are the most popular.
More than three quarters of consumers choose beef burgers followed by turkey in the US (13%) and chicken in Canada (12%).
It’s all about the toppings.
Consumers are getting creative with hamburger toppings with avocado, bacon and hot peppers amongst popular choices. Both Americans and Canadians love ketchup (85%) but are divided on relish with 58% of Canadians topping their burgers with it versus 26% of Americans. Mustard, cheese and mayonnaise are popular choices in both Canada and the United States.
Grilled vegetables are the ultimate side.
Both Americans and Canadians like to grill veggies but preferences vary. Canadians are most likely to grill peppers (46%) while Americans favour onions (33%). Other commonly grilled vegetables include asparagus, mushrooms and corn.
Consumers sip on soda and beer.
More than 40% of Canadians and Americans agree that a cold soda / pop is the best way to wash down a burger, while a quarter of consumers prefer beer. Water is a distant third with just 13% of consumers sipping on it with a burger.
