Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of the Day

Experts say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it provides your body with the much needed energy it requires to tackle the day. This is especially important for kids as studies indicate that breakfast may enhance attention, speed of retaining information, creativity, learning and memory.

Given that September is National Breakfast Month AND the start of fall…AND the start of the school season, Contract Testing conducted a survey of Canadians to explore breakfast preferences. Do Canadians choose healthy choices over value? What are the most popular on-the-go family breakfast choices? We set out to get the answers to these questions and more.

Canadians Like Breakfast but Dinner Ranks #1
While Canadians – like many around the world – love their breakfast (maybe its the waking with an empty stomach or the smells of popular breakfast foods like bacon, pancakes or cinnamon toast), the mealtime itself actually ranks second in terms of what Canadian families favour – coming before lunch but far under dinner – which ranks as the favourite meal among nearly 50 percent of respondents.

Canadians Enjoying the Health Benefits of Eating Breakfast
Healthy eating experts would be proud as we can report that nearly three quarters of Canadians eat breakfast every day. This means that families across the country are enjoying the many benefits to fuelling up in the morning including weight control, improved concentration and lots of energy to start a new and productive day.

Health Over Value
Did you know that breakfast eaters tend to consume more fruit, vegetables, whole grains and dairy throughout the day than non-breakfast eaters? Choosing the right breakfast can keep you going throughout the day. Our survey shows that overall, Canadians prefer healthy options over fast and easy and cost, when it comes to breakfast foods. Least important to Canadians was whether or not their kids would like it! Sorry kids!

On-the-Go Preferences
Before you grab that fast-food breakfast sandwich or donut, consider easy at-home on-the-go breakfast options that can nourish both body and mind. We asked Canadians to share their preferences for on-the-go breakfasts and here’s what they had to say:

Favourites included egg sandwich (egg with toast or english muffin) (55 percent), bagel (plain or with a spread such as cream cheese) (55 percent), toast (any kind) (54 percent), cereal bar/ breakfast bar or granola bar (51 percent).

Less favoured options included smoothies (44 percent) and yogurt (47 percent).

Other breakfast favourites that may not fit into the on-the-go category but can still be considered as popular choices include cereal (of course!) and oatmeal as well as fruit, leftovers and donuts.

So next time you consider skipping the most important meal of the day, grab a piece of fruit, a bagel or cook up some protein rich eggs – and make the most of your day!
